Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I take my child on holiday during term time?

Schools can only authorise absences in exceptional circumstances. Family holidays taken during term time are not considered exceptional and will usually be recorded as unauthorised.

What are “exceptional circumstances”?

Exceptional circumstances are rare, unavoidable and must be agreed by the Headteacher in advance.
They may include:

  • A significant family emergency
  • A recognised religious observance
  • A significant one‑off life event

Cost of holidays, work commitments or quieter travel times are not considered exceptional.

What happens if I take my child out of school without permission?

Bradford Council may issue a Penalty Notice. For term‑time holidays, this is issued without a prior warning notice.

How many days off school can lead to a fine?

Ten unauthorised sessions (5 school days) within a rolling 10‑week period. A 5‑day term‑time holiday meets this threshold.

Does good or 100% attendance prevent a fine?

No. Any unauthorised absence may still result in a fine, regardless of previous attendance.

What if my child is ill?

Please contact the school on the first day of absence and keep us informed. Medical evidence may be requested where absences become frequent or prolonged.

What if my child has additional needs or health concerns?

If your child has SEND or ongoing medical or mental health needs, please speak to the school as early as possible. We will work with families and other agencies to provide appropriate support.

Who should I contact if I am worried about attendance?

Your child’s school should always be your first point of contact. Early communication helps us work together effectively.
