Next Steps

Next Steps in EYFS

At Eldwick, we want pupils to be motivated by the intrinsic value of achievement; however, we are committed to acknowledging students for developing good learning and social habits through explicit recognition and celebration of children’s achievements.

The setting of ‘Next Steps’ in EYFS, is one way in which we do this.

How Next Steps are identified

Practitioner knowledge of individual children’s strengths, interests and areas of development is extensive due the amount of quality time we spend with children in provision.

Summative assessment information, along with information from families and our EYFS team are used to agree a child’s Next Step.

Every child in EYFS has a Next Step and, as they are achieved a new ‘Next Step’ is set and shared with families. They are carefully matched to a child’s current level to ensure it can be achieved within a half term. Tweaks may be made to a Next Step to make it more achievable if necessary.

How Next Steps are shared

A child’s Next Step is displayed in the classroom with their name and date. These Next Steps are shared with the child verbally and with families via Tapestry.

The Tapestry entry has the title ‘Next Step’ and is accompanied by the ‘Next Step’ image.

How children are supported to achieve their Next Step

Class teachers make time, within the school week, to encourage children to work on their Next Step. Tapestry, and class emails, are monitored daily to encourage family participation and support.

How Next Steps are celebrated

When a child achieves their ‘Next Step’ they are given a special recognition sticker to wear. This tells their families that they have achieved their Next Step. Wherever possible, the class teacher will add a photo and comment on Tapestry before the end of the school day. The Tapestry entry has the title ‘Next Step Achieved’ and is accompanied by the ‘Next Step Achieved’ star image. Class Teachers  play a celebration song to mark this achievement.
